Summer is just a wonderfully busy time; taking the kids to sailing, golf and swimming lessons, trips to the library, seeing the latest movie, eating smores around the bonfire, watching storms roll through and going on nature scavenger hunts. But the best thing of summer is enjoying time with friends and family. Whether its for a party to celebrate someone or something or just having dinner together, its always great to get together.
It’s also nice to show appreciation and generosity as well, so here are a few gift giving ideas for your favorite host/hostess, your favorite kid or your favorite person!
This is such an adorable charm bracelet from Alex and Ani!
Here’s a little something for your favorite pooch!
Ah, the smell of the beach and salt air! What nautical loving hostess wouldn’t want these!
Golfing is something my husband has enjoyed. I don’t mind it, but I don’t golf enough to be good; I usually just enjoy the beautiful courses, the dining and driving the golf cart… really is their anything more fun than that???
This summer, my son decided he wanted to learn how to play golf… enter Junior Golf. Now, I don’t have much experience, rather I got scolded by my father-in-law the first time the family went golfing because I was quoting from Caddyshack the whole time… I guess that’s bad etiquette! Anyway, the whole family is so excited for him that golfing gifts are showing up. We did buy him a set of clubs, but now he has a custom golf towel, tees, balls, scope, glove and of course a golfing wardrobe! I’m kind of surprised that golf shoes haven’t shown up yet.
Do you have a little golfer in the family? Is one of your kids interested and going to start? Then here are a few things you might want to consider getting him/her.
(All items are found at shopspring.com. Clicking on an image will take you right there!)
In addition to sunscreen, those sunny days can be hard on the eyes, so a visor or cap would be a great idea.
A collared shirt and shorts are quite appropriate for the golf course. But no one says you have to wear a school uniform, so check out some fun clothes for little guy!
If you are looking for some gift ideas, or just want to get a few accessories, I suggest checking out Amazon. Here are some of my finds:
I hope these give you some great ideas for starting out your Junior Golfer!
Oh my goodness! Summer has been so busy and so wonderful! The kids got out of school early in June and its been non-stop ever since (hence falling behind on writing and designing for the blog!). My daughter is busy learning to sail and my son is in Junior golf. In addition, we’ve started swimming lessons, having backyard water balloon fights, learning to ride bikes, planting flowers, gardening and training our puppy, Edison, and of course summer reading and bonfires!
With enjoying so much time outside, I decided to get a new pair (or two!) of sunglasses. But in searching for the right pair, I came across some great frames that I just had to share with you. So if you are looking for some fun summer sunglasses, you might just want to check these out!
I’m in love with these from Dresslilly! They are the Ombre UV Protection Wayfarer Sunglass and are on sale right now for only $5.32!
This next pair is also from Dresslilly and I love the two-toned color. Another great thing is the nose piece, sometimes you need to just flip the sunglasses on the top of your head without ruining your hair, and this will do that! At only $4.91, how can you pass them up?
Since I’m all for variety, I love these oversized sunglasses from Freyrs. I can picture wearing them with a wide-brimmed straw hat sitting pool side!
Everyone also needs an aviator in their collection, so check these great frames from Tory Burch!
The only type of sunglasses that I haven’t shown are polarized. I seem to have the hardest time find them that aren’t guys, that aren’t for hunting and that are cute and fun to wear. So if you find them… let me know!
Each year, I let my kids pick something new to try over summer. This year my 6 year old daughter chose sailing!!! I enjoy sailing myself and am rather self-taught, so I’m thrilled that she has shown an interest in it and wants to learn. Granted, I think watching Moana over and over has influenced that decision a bit!
Each Monday night, we are shoreside learning something new and loving every minute! She is learning to sail in a Pram, although she calls it the bathtub! I suppose their is a bit of a resemblance. The first class she got to learn a few knots, which prompted her to ask for a rope of her own to practice at home… of course you may! So far its just been lots of fun for her playing with the boat, going swimming and meeting new friends. I look forward to seeing how she progresses through summer and all that she will learn.
Are your kids in any programs this summer? If you are thinking about sailing here are a few things you may need!
First is a life jacket of course! Make sure its fitted properly. You can pick up jackets in many places, but I go to West Marine. They have a great selection of sizes and colors. Since no one really likes wearing them, especially kids, its a great idea to pick out a fun print or color that will help encourage them to keep it on!
Naturally your kiddo will need an awesome swimsuit too like these from Joe Fresh. I also recommend a rashguard, helps make the life jacket a bit more comfortable.
Next thing you need, is a beach towel to wrap your little sailor up at the end of the day.
How about some sailing shoes so your kids won’t slip or hurt their toes? Sperry’s are always a great option!
Next thing you need is a bag to put it all in. My first thought is a great sail bag from Sea Bags. I’ve always loved their Navy Anchor Tote… check it out!
The next thing your little one need is a boat. Just kidding!
I’m so excited! Today, I finally got the next item up on Etsy!
Summer is coming and that means lots of parties happening, which means LOTS of planning and organization. With that in mind, I’ve created the Invitee List. This sheet is great and I can’t wait to use it this summer with the rest of the party sheets.
What makes the Invitee List amazing is all the features that you normally don’t find on a simple guest list. This sheet features space for your guests addresses, but its so much more than that. Their are spaces for the number of people in each family that you’ve invited and how many will be actually attending. How many times do you invite a family, but due to scheduling one can’t make it? Keep track! There are also great check boxes to note if your guest has R.S.V.P.’d or not. And, since I think Thank You notes are important, their is a check box for keeping track of that as well!
I love the esthetic of this sheet as well. Its simple, lots of white space for extra notes if you need, but has a simple, yet modern nautical flair!
This Invitee List works great with the other party sheets we have on Etsy as well. Since, this sheet is a printable download, if your guest list keeps growing, just print out more sheets!
I am so excited… today we adopt our puppy! (Keep an eye on my Instagram (@roguewavedesigns) for first pictures!) My husband and I have been married 12+ years and this is our first dog together. Growing up we each had dogs, but very different experiences with them. Together we’ve had a cat and for the last number of years children… who have been begging for a puppy. Well, their dreams are about to come true. I’m excited, but I know how much work is coming my way with the little fur ball. So, to make it more fun for me, I got to go shopping with one of my closest friends who has a couple fur-babies of her own to help me figure out what I need and don’t need.
We hit, Home Goods, PetCo and a few other places in addition to Amazon to find what I needed. I learned that their is A LOT of items out there and I look forward to learning more about some of them, but I tried to just stick to the basics… although, I’m pretty sure a puppy life jacket will be showing up for summer! (Any recommendations???) Here’s some of what I got:
Are you planning on getting a puppy soon? In celebration of our little guy, I’m giving away a free download of a puppy supply list. Hopefully this will help you find what you need and be prepared as well. You can download the PDF here.
Some of the items I have were gifts from family and friends. But since I do love to shop and look around, here are some great finds, that I might just be splurging on in the near future!
One of my favorite brands, Kiel James Patrick, just came out with a pet collection that I’m totally lusting over! Here are some of their items and totally worth checking out:

As I begin to use these products and find other great ones, I’ll be sure to share them with you too!
Sometimes life gets busy… really busy! Over the last few weeks things have been really crazy in my house. The kids were on spring break, but then they both got sick, passed the germs back and forth a few times until they landed on me. Needless to say, I got a little behind on my work, but I’m so glad that I stayed organized, because I was able to hand stuff off to my husband to help.
Since my first child was born (8 years ago!), I’ve become a huge fan of meal planning for a week. I found that I wasn’t so stressed when dinner time came around and it saved me many trips to the grocery store. Over the years, I’ve tried various ways to plan meals for the family: plain white paper, calendar, multiple list pads, sticky-notes and more! What I found, was that their wasn’t enough room, or I had too many little pieces to keep together, so I created my own and after a few tweaks and making it look aesthetically pleasing, I’m happy to release it to my Etsy shop today!
There are so many things about this sheet that I love. Of course, I love the nautical touches (what can I say, sailing is always on my mind!), I love the simplicity of it (so much white space for extra notes!), but unlike so many other meal planners, there is room for breakfast and lunch NOT just dinner. Also, you’ll see a small line to the right, that is for your extra notes. I created it to write down which cookbook and page number I could find my recipe on. I got tired of writing down “Pot Roast” but then forgetting which cookbook recipe I wanted to make… problem solved!
Then off to the right is for your grocery list. When creating my meal plan with my cookbook right in front of me, it is quite easy to create my grocery list. I wanted space just for that so when I am ready to hit the store, I could just trim it out and know that my list is complete.
But that’s not all! I’m also happy to announce, that now you can order my Modern Nautical Recipe Cardson Etsy already printed! They are being sold in sets of 10 ($8.00) or 20 ($15.00). These make great gifts for yourself, your favorite hostess, or that special bride!
You may have picked up from my Instagram posts, that I love coffee and tea. Every Monday, well almost every Monday, I try to post my mug for #MugMonday as well. Whenever I go shopping, I find that I’m checking out mugs, so here I am sharing some of my favorite finds.
Coastal Life Crab Mug in Teal Blue from Bed Bath and Beyond
Come to the Tusk Mug from ModCloth (currently on sale for 30% off)
Though technology is great for many things, I find their are times when paper and pen are just better. I’ve tried changing over to a digital calendar, but my paper planner is just better. I’ve tried saving my recipes on my tablet and using my iPad as a cookbook, but that didn’t work so well. My paper cookbook never dims, never sleeps, never needs to be refreshed nor looses its page.
With all the paper I use, I’ve been able to try a variety of pens as well. Some had too think of a line, others had splotchy pigment and uneven ink flow, but others were just right. So to help you find which pen is the right one for you, here are my favorites.
(Just click the name or the image to check them out on Amazon.)
1. Staedtler Triplus Fineliner Marker Pen. I’m not going to lie, these are my all-time favorites. I have three sets in the house for just myself and had to buy another because my husband kept taking them! They work great on a variety of papers and don’t bleed through. They have a nice fine tip and the ink doesn’t spread or smear. They also come in tons of colors and at some art stores you can even buy them individually instead of a set.
2. Paper-Mate InkJoy Ballpoint 300RT 1.0 M. These you will find all over my house as well. They are inexpensive and come in 10 bright colors. Since I share these with my kids, I like that they are retractable so they don’t loose caps and being ballpoints, they are great for check writing when you need to use a little extra pressure on the paper. They write really smooth and the kids haven’t been able to destroy them!
3. Jot Ballpoint Pens. If you want a truly inexpensive pen, head to the DollarTree. These pens don’t last as long as others, but they have a really smooth ink and come in variety of ink colors. So if you are apt to loose pens, you won’t go wrong with this 6 pack of pens for a buck!
4. Pilot G-2 Gel Pen. This is my favorite gel pen. It writes incredibly smooth, so much so, that when I let others use it, they always comment on it as well. They come in 15 colors in a variety of packages.
5. Pilot Varsity Disposable Fountain Pen. Not too many people use a fountain pen, but I enjoy it. They aren’t my go-to for every day things, but when writing a thank you note or something that I want a little more flair with, I grab the Varsity. As all fountain pens, if you are not used to writing with them allow yourself some time and practice. The ink flow can be fast and can create splotches, but using the right pressure of pen on paper, these pens will up your correspondence game! They come in 7 colors.
Do you have a favorite pen? Please share in the comments below!
I am so excited to share with you some of what I’ve been working on!
When I first started Rogue Wave Designs years ago, I was doing freelance graphic design work… but then children came, sidelining the business. During the years that my kids were home (pre-Kindergarten), I found that keeping things simple and organized helped to keep life from getting too stressful and allowed me to spend the most amount of time with my family and friends. I found that I kept creating similar lists over and over or thought, ‘if I only had something like…’, so I decided to design it. Then when I needed a certain sheet, I just had to print it out and everything I need was right there… no wasted time! But, the side-effect of being a graphic designer, is I wanted it to look pretty too. So I refined the look and now I’m making it available to you!
The sheets that I have created (so far) are now available on Etsy! I have, what I’m calling the “Party Collection” and the “Travel Collection”, available right now.
The Party Collection, currently features the sheets: Party Planner, Thank You List and Recipe Card. All are instant downloads and can be printed on your home printer. All feature a coordinated, modern, nautical feel with plenty of white space to write your own notes.
The Thank You List has spaces to write down the gifts received, from who and even a checkbox to help you keep track of sending thank you notes. The Party Planner, has areas for keeping track of your guest list and RSVPs, planning your menu and a prep schedule to make sure everything gets done so you can enjoy your company! The Recipe Card has room for all the ingredients and directions while giving your recipe collection a cool nautical feel.
The Travel Collection, features the Packing List. I found that whether I was going away for a week or a weekend, I seemed to always pack the same things. Then packing for two little kids on top of it, I was constantly writing out the same check list… now I just print out three copies and we are good to go!
The Packing List has sections for Clothes, Medical, Toiletries, Electronics, Misc. with plenty of extra lines and space for you to add your own items as well.
As mentioned this is what I have ready for you so far. I’m working on refining more organizational sheets and will be releasing them soon. Please sign up for our newsletter (on the right) so you can be in the know for when we release new products and other Rogue Wave Designs news!
I’d love to hear from you, so please leave a comment or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also follow me on Instagram and Pinterest.
